Skyworks' has introduced a family of compact low-power Power over Ethernet (PoE) powered device (PD) evaluation boards, leveraging high-quality components from Würth Elektronik. These boards, based on the Si3406 isolated flyback design, serve as reference designs for power supplies in PoE PD applications, providing flexibility with different output voltages and power levels while ensuring robustness through the use of Würth Elektronik components.
The Si3406 IC at the heart of these evaluation boards integrates an IEEE 802.3at compatible PoE interface alongside a current control-based DC/DC converter. Notably, the Si3406 PD incorporates an array of internal features including a rectifier bridge, detection and classification circuits, DC/DC and hot-swap switches, TVS overvoltage protection, soft-start and current limit circuits, thermal shutdown, optional secondary-side synchronous rectification driver, MPS generation modes, and inrush current protection. Additionally, the PCB design enables quick assessment of secondary-side synchronous rectification to enhance system efficiency.
Key components from Würth Elektronik integrated into the design include flyback EP10 power transformers, WE-RJ45 LAN through-hole connectors with integrated Ethernet transformer and common-mode choke, WE-CBF SMT EMI suppression ferrite beads, as well as WCAP-ATG5, WCAP-ATG8, and WCAP-ATLL aluminum electrolytic capacitors. This collaboration ensures that the evaluation boards deliver reliable performance and meet the demands of PoE PD applications.
