Current Sense Transformers

Current Sense Transformers are specialized devices that are specifically designed to detect and accurately measure the flow of current in an isolated conductor or primary winding. These transformers operate by producing an alternating current in a secondary winding that is proportional to the current being measured. The frequency range in which Current Sense Transformers operate typically spans from 2 Hz to 1 MHz. These transformers are designed to handle a wide range of current ratings, ranging from 125 mA to as high as 4000 A. There are three main types of Current Sense Transformers available: Invasive, Non-Invasive (Solid Core), and Non-Invasive (Split Core). Invasive Current Sense Transformers require physical insertion into the conductor through which the current is flowing. This type of transformer provides accurate measurements but requires interruption of the circuit for installation. Non-Invasive (Solid Core) Current Sense Transformers, on the other hand, do not require any physical contact with the conductor. Instead, they are designed with a solid core around which the conductor is passed. This type of transformer offers easy installation and does not disrupt the circuit during measurement. Non-Invasive (Split Core) Current Sense Transformers are similar to the solid core type but feature a split core design. This allows the transformer to be easily opened and closed around the conductor without the need for any disconnection. It offers convenience in installation and is suitable for applications where it is impractical to interrupt the circuit. In summary, Current Sense Transformers are specialized devices used to detect and measure current flow. They generate a proportional alternating current in a secondary winding based on the current passing through an isolated conductor or primary winding. The frequency range and current ratings vary depending on the specific transformer. The three main types include Invasive, Non-Invasive (Solid Core), and Non-Invasive (Split Core), each offering different installation and measurement advantages.
