Texas Instruments has introduced the TPS2661, a highly advanced current loop protector tailored for industrial applications requiring precise current loop protection. This compact and feature-rich device offers comprehensive miswiring protection for analog inputs, outputs, sensor transmitters, HART inputs, and UART IO.
The TPS2661 stands out due to its ability to provide universal input protection for current loops ranging from ±20 mA, 0 mA to 20 mA, to 4 mA to 20 mA. The device's low RON of 7.5 Ω effectively minimizes voltage drop in the current loop, thereby extending the operating range and ensuring seamless operation even with lower voltage power supplies.
One of the key highlights of the TPS2661 is its robust protection capabilities against miswiring and transient events. The device can withstand and safeguard loads from positive and negative supply voltages up to ±50 V, offering unparalleled protection against surge (IEC61000-4-5) and EFT (IEC61000-4-4) transients for signal lines.
Furthermore, the TPS2661 features a MODE pin that provides flexibility by enabling a 2x current limit, facilitating the proper startup of two-wire transmitters. The device can operate from an external bipolar supply of ± 2.25 V to ±20 V or from unipolar supplies ranging from 3 V to 30 V, ensuring versatile compatibility with different power sources.
In addition, the TPS2661 incorporates a loop power mode that allows for convenient loop testing in an unpowered state without the need for ±Vs supplies. Its internal protection control blocks and 50 V rating enhance system reliability by effectively protecting against output side miswiring in analog outputs and sensor transmitters through current path interruption.
Moreover, the TPS2661's compact 8-pin SOT-23 package, measuring 2.9 mm x 1.6 mm, significantly reduces system footprint while delivering exceptional performance and safety standards. Overall, Texas Instruments' TPS2661 sets a new benchmark for current loop protection in industrial settings, ensuring reliable operation and safeguarding critical equipment from potential risks.
