STMicroelectronics has developed the STR485LVQT, a low-power differential line transceiver designed for data transmission in standard RS485 applications operating in half-duplex mode. The transceiver supports data and enable signals compatible with both 1V8 and 3V3 supplies. The bus signal supply is linked to 3.3 V ±10%. Furthermore, each driver output and receiver input is safeguarded against ±4 kV electrostatic discharge (HBM), ±8 kV contact discharge, and ±16 kV air discharge without latching up. The transceiver offers flexibility with two selectable speeds through the SLR pin: a fast data rate of up to 20 Mbps and a slower rate of 250 kbps suitable for extended cable runs. Additionally, it incorporates a thermal shutdown circuit to prevent excessive power dissipation resulting from bus contention or faults, ensuring the driver outputs are forced into a high-impedance state. The receiver also includes a fail-safe feature that guarantees a high output state when the inputs are left open, shorted, or idle.
