Nuvoton has launched the NuMicro M254, M256, and M258 series, a range of 32-bit microcontrollers built around the Arm Cortex-M23 core. These microcontrollers feature an LCD driver with COM/SEG functionality and capacitive touch key functions, making them suitable for various applications. They operate at speeds up to 48 MHz and offer up to 256 Kbytes Flash memory, up to 32 Kbytes SRAM, a wide operating voltage range of 1.75 V to 5.5 V, 5 V I/O tolerance, and an operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C.
The M254, M256, and M258 series microcontrollers excel in low power consumption, consuming just 110 μA/MHz in normal run mode at 48 MHz. In power-down mode with the real-time clock (RTC) on, power consumption is as low as 3.8 μA, while in RAM retention mode with the RTC off, it can be reduced to 2.2 μA. The deep power-down mode achieves an impressive power consumption of just 1.6 μA. Additionally, these microcontrollers integrate an RTC with an independent VBAT voltage source pin, enabling low-power operation even when the main power is turned off.
The M254, M256, and M258 series offer different LCD options, including 8 x 44, 6 x 46, and 4 x 48 COM/SEG LCDs. The COM/SEG LCD driver supports various bias voltage and duty settings, and a built-in charge pump allows for a wide voltage range of 3 V to 5 V for the LCD panel. These microcontrollers also incorporate capacitive touch sensing functions, supporting up to 24 touch keys with single-scan or programmable periodic key scans. Notably, the M258 series includes support for a crystal-less USB 2.0 full-speed device, complying with USB battery charging detection v1.2 (BC 1.2) profile for high-speed battery charging.
Equipped with an array of peripherals, the M254, M256, and M258 series microcontrollers offer extensive connectivity options. These include timers, watchdog timers, RTCs, up to eight channels of PDMA, UART, USCI, SPI/I²S, I²C, ISO-7816-3, and up to 12 channels of basic PWM. Additionally, they feature high-performance analog circuits such as a 16-channel 12-bit 730 kSPS ADC, up to 2 sets of 12-bit 1 MSPS DAC, and a temperature sensor, reducing the need for external components.
The M254, M256, and M258 series microcontrollers are available in LQFP44, LQFP64, LQFP80, and LQFP128 packages. These packages are pin-compatible with Nuvoton's M251, M252, M031, and M480 series, allowing for easy system design and seamless replacement for functional enhancement.
